Cross Country

Kiaora families,

Just a quick reminder that the Maungaraki School Cross Country is being held this coming TUESDAY the 21st of May 2013. The event will take place from 9am through to lunch time with a morning tea break at 10:30am.

For your information, if you wish to come along and support your child, the year 1 and 2 children will be running after the morning tea break (some time between 11 and 12).

I also encourage you to chat with your child about perseverance during the course of the next week.
The Kowhai Syndicate have been learning about perseverance as a part of their discovery program this term and our goal is for all children to persevere and do their very best at the cross country next week!

Between now and next week, please continue to remind your child to wear suitable footwear for practising their running at school each day.

And that's a wrap!

Tena Koutou Room 5 families,

It's time to give yourselves a big pat on the back for the tremendous effort we have all put into ensuring a successful first term at Maungaraki School!

Time has flown by and I am sure you will have all noticed the growth made by all of the Room 5 children. When I think back just 11 short weeks ago, we were all new to Room 5, reliant on our parents and our teacher; and eager to settle into our learning. THEN when I fast forward 11 weeks I am blown away by everyones progress!

1. Children are more independent in their learning, friendships and self management.

2. Children are taking responsibility for our classroom at all times of the day, putting down chairs in the morning, ensuring resources are put away properly, keeping our room clean and helping friends to pack up for home time. Congratulations wonderful people!

3. Room 5 children have developed large circles of friends.

4. Presentation of work has risen to a good standard!

5. Children are using thinking tools in their oral language and written language. They are beginning to write some well thought out stories!

6. Children are trying extra hard with their reading and Mathematics which is making for a very proud teacher!

Well done everyone for all your hard work this term! I can only imagine the wonderful things we will have accomplished by the end of Term 2!

Thank you everyone for the very special Enviro Schools assembly on Monday.

Also, a huge thank you for the wonderful ANZAC memorial service this morning. What a special day to celebrate. Ka pai.

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday. I look forward to seeing you all when you arrive back at school in two weeks!

The home stretch...

Hi everyone,
Congratulations on a very successful first term in Room 5! However, it's not over yet! As we head into this final week of term there are a few special things happening that families need to be aware of.

1. On Monday morning Maungaraki School is set to receive our Silver Enviro Award. There will be a special assembly being held in the hall at 10am during which we will receive the award. There will be many special guests including some local MP's and media. We are looking forward to celebrating this success with our friends and community!

2. On Friday, the last day of term, we are having a 'Dress Up' day. Children are encouraged to wear clothing  that represents a group they belong to. This could be a sports uniform, dancing uniform, school T- shirt.... We will be having the final assembly of the term at 11:45am- please note this earlier start time. The assembly will be followed by a short ANZAC ceremony to which parents are also invited.

3. On Friday, Room 5 farewelled one of our good friends and classmates, Penny. We wish Penny all the best for her new adventures in her new town and school.

4. This Friday is also going to be Izzy's last day at Maungaraki School. We look forward to spending this final week with her before she sets off to her new home and new school.

Given the busy nature of the week, please be aware that some children may not bring home a reading book every single day, however, I still encourage you to read books from home and the library.

Everyone in Room 5 is beginning to tire out, so lets give this week 100% and get ourselves to the well deserved holidays!

Room 5's lead up to Easter...

Wow! What a busy week we have had as we prepared for the Easter break!
Room 5 children stayed focussed on their learning all week, even with the excitement of Swimming Sports and Easter looming in the air - you all deserve a pat on the back!

We have also been hugely focussed on Self Management... What do we need to do to manage ourselves for learning? In our friendships? To stay healthy? and to be independent?

Room 5 children have been working on listening carefully to others and to be able to relay a message to others without forgetting. This is challenging for many of us. We have been doing various activities in the classroom to practice this but our most favorite of all is playing Chinese whispers. We have learned that we need to be focussed, to listen carefully but also, we must speak very clearly to help our peers to understand our message. These are nice easy things to practice at home too! Our challenge is to get at least one message around our Chinese Whispers circle by the end of term :)

Easter Activities:

On Tuesday we were learning about RESPECT. Respect is one of the very important values upheld by Maungaraki School students, staff, parents and community. We know that respect comes in many forms.

We can respect people by...
- Helping
- Caring
- Being nice
- Using manners
- Sharing
- Listening
- Showing understanding

We practiced many ways of showing RESPECT on Tuesday as we decorated some yummy Easter Egg Biscuits.

1) We had to respect the differences of children in our classroom by checking that everyone can eat the biscuits and decorations without getting sick. We understand that we chose special ingredients with the help of some parents that would not cause our Room 5 friends to have allergic reactions.

2) We shared ingredients and tools with our group.

3) We listened to Miss Jackson and Mrs Counsell carefully so we knew what to do.

3) We helped others who needed help.

Exciting! Yummy! Easter!!!
4) We used our manners every step of the way. We thanked Mrs Counsell for giving up her morning to help us with our fun activity.

We shared. We waited patiently for our turn.

Careful concentration and fine motor skills.

Delicious!

Compliments to the chef!

Mrs Counsell was a beautiful help!

Afterwards, we wrote some amazing stories about our cookie making using fabulous adjectives to describe them!

Swimming Sports:

What a successful day we all had at Huia Pool! Congratulations to all the children who participated in the fun swimming events today. All of the teachers are very proud of your efforts!

Swimming Sports is a very important day on our school calendar as it is a prime opportunity for children to participate and contribute to the life of the school, develop skills in risk taking, perseverance, listening, responsibility and also to develop, practice and maintain social skills and relationships.

A huge thank you to all the parents who made the time to attend and support our children and teachers today. It was a very tiring afternoon for all of our junior children and your encouragement throughout this event helped tremendously in teaching our children to persevere to the end and succeed.
A fabulous time was had by all!

A very Happy Easter to all families! Stay safe this holiday and I can't wait to see you all back in Room 5 ready to learn on Wednesday April the 3rd at 8:50am!!!

The 'low down' for next week (Week 8)

Hi all,

Again, we see the end of another successful week in Room 5. Congratulations go out to everybody in Room 5 who has participated in swimming lessons at Huia Pool over the last two weeks. The children are buzzing with excitement over their newly learned swimming skills and are very proud of their achievements.

Children have not been to the library today to issue new books. We have been busy working on literacy activities instead because we do not have the opportunity to return new books next Friday (Good Friday).

There will be no spelling notebooks sent home next week because of Swimming Sports and Good Friday limiting learning time to just 2 days. Children will bring home reading books OR poem books for reading homework from Monday - Wednesday.

Thursday March 28th is our Swimming Sports day.

  • Please ensure that children bring their togs AND towel and goggles if they need them
  • The children will eat their lunch at school prior to the event
  • ALL children are to travel on the bus with their classroom teacher which departs Maungaraki School at 11:50am
  • Parents are most welcome to attend the event to support the children
  • Parents will need to organise transport to Huia Pool for themselves as the school buses are only able to cater for the children's transport
The swimming sports event is about children having a go and having fun!

Friday March 29th is GOOD FRIDAY, an excellent day for all your tuckered out swimmers to stay home and rest :)

School resumes on Wednesday the 3rd of April.

Looking forward to a busy week with a little bit of Easter magic thrown into the mix!

Ka kite

A few quick reminders...

  • Please make sure 'Poem' books are returned to school on Monday. Some were not returned to school this week and as a result work has been unable to be finished.

  • Please ensure that spelling note books are in book bags every day. We often do activities using our spelling words during the week and it is helpful to have notebooks available.

  • Swimming is on this Monday - Thursday. Please remember to bring swimming togs and towel each day. Also remember to bring lots of food for school lunches and to get early nights because swimming is hungry and tiring work!

Thank you families!!!! Miss Jackson and Room 5 appreciate all your help :)

Swimming

Room 5 have had a wonderful first week of swimming lessons at Huia Pool. The children completed some fun activities in the pool on Monday and were grouped according to confidence and skills. We have three super groups who have all made so much progress since their first lesson on Monday! Well done! I can't wait to see our amazing swimmers learning lots more this week!

Miss Jackson LOVES the way Room 5 High fliers....

  • Listen to the teachers and instructors at the pool
  • Use inside voices on the bus
  • Kindly thank the bus driver
  • Look after their own belongings by keeping them safely in their bags and under the seats
  • Dress themselves quickly
  • Wait patiently
  • Use WALKING feet on the poolside
  • Show perseverance in the swimming pool

Wananei! Fantastic!

Life Education...

We have been soooo patient this week as we walked into school each day passing the Life Education classroom longing for our turn to go and see Harold the Giraffe... some children were even counting down the sleeps. So as you could imagine, Room 5 was a buzz of excitement this morning as we prepared for our first trip to the Life Education classroom.

We had a lot of fun learning about how the things we need to do to keep ourselves healthy. Jo taught us that we need...

- To eat a variety of food
- To get lots of sleep
- To get lots of exercise
- Love, shelter and oxygen
- Safety
- Water

We learned how food can fuel our bodies and give us lots of energy.

Room 5 and the 'Life Education' classroom.

These are some of the things that we learned about today. We were super busy!

We learnt about how important it is to give our bodies exercise.
Time to get moving!

Our Star of the Day, had a special picture with Harold the Giraffe.

We listened very carefully to Jo.

We also learnt where food goes when we eat it.

We are all very excited to go back and visit Harold and Jo next week!!!

New Toys in Room 5!

Today the children of Room 5 received a very thoughtful gesture from the Yee family! Adele, Sophie and Caleb came to Room 5 to deliver a BEAUTIFUL wooden dolls house complete with accessories for the children to play with. Sophie no longer plays with her dolls house anymore and thought that the children in Room 5 would get lots of enjoyment from it!

Thank you so much for thinking of us when you had your clean out. Room 5 children LOVE it! And someone else does too.... is that MR PAMPALONE playing in the picture???

Discovery Time!

On Wednesday afternoon we had our very first Discovery Time session for 2013!

To begin with, the entire Kowhai syndicate met together in the staffroom to listen to and discuss the Dr Seuss favorite 'Oh the things you can do that are good for you!' We put on our white thinking hats and thought about ways we can manage ourselves that will benefit both ourselves AND others. We came up with these fabulous ideas...

How can we take care of others and ourselves?

 be kind
 be helpful and caring
use our manners
 wash our hands
cover our mouth when we cough
think before we act and speak

Next, we got to choose an activity to spend our afternoon at. Some people chose to do some threading with Miss Postma; sand and water play with Miss Perkins; construction with Mrs Wardle OR craft with Miss Jackson. Enjoy a couple of pictures of some Room 5 children and their crafty work!

We made 'Angry Bird' characters.

We designed an aquarium.

We got creative and made fish bowls too.

Welcome to the end of week 2!!!
The children in Room 5 have had a very busy start to the year.
Friendships are blossoming and it is lovely to see children maintaining relationships with their friends in  the other junior school classrooms!

Reading is well and truly underway with all children bringing home a book or 2 to read each night. We are working on developing independence in Room 5 (one the Maungaraki School values). The children are trying hard to remember to read their book each night and return it to school the following day WITH their reading log. Parents can also help by making sure that all children have a book bag to use at school - please remember that last years book bag is perfect for using again this year if you don't have a new one.

We have been writing poems this week called 'This is me'. We are all very excited to bring them home tonight and read them to our families!!! We hope you enjoy them. Remember that Poem books need to be returned to school tomorrow.

The Life Education bus has arrived at Maungaraki School! We begin our lessons next week. There are only a few people who still need to return their permission forms and then we are ready to see what Harold's Picnic is all about!

Next week we will also be carrying on with Hectors World (Cyber Safety). Today we learned about our 'Personal Information'. We discovered that we should NEVER type our personal information into the computer when we are on the internet. You never know who could see it.... We know that if we ever feel unsafe or unsure on the internet the golden rule is to...

Tell an adult right away so they can help us to do the right thing!

Our buddy class this year is Room 9. Each of us has our own buddy in Room 9. We listened to the Room 9 children tell us all about the things they like and then we got to choose a buddy who likes the same things as us! Today our buddies did spelling with us, read books, played language games AND took us to the lower ball field to check out the garden and play 'Stuck in the Mud'. It was AWESOME! We were all sooo tired after having such a great time with our new friends!

Here are a few snaps from 'buddy time' today :)

Enjoy the end of your week!
